Steins;Gate 0 is White Fox's prequel-sequel to the beloved time travel thriller — a darker, more psychologically exhausted companion piece that follows the branch of Okabe Rintaro who gave up, watching him try to live with the consequences of the future he chose not to fight for. Where the original Steins;Gate builds toward hope through accumulating pain, 0 begins in defeat and spends much of its runtime in the shadow of grief, asking what a person looks like when they've stopped believing in their own capacity to change anything. The emotional register is quieter and more melancholy than its predecessor, which has divided fans, but the series earns its final convergence with the original timeline's events through careful, patient character work. The Amadeus AI storyline raises interesting questions about the nature of memory and identity that the original couldn't address.
