Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) is BONES' original anime adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's landmark manga — and while it diverges dramatically from the source material in its second half, it stands as a distinct artistic achievement that many fans hold dear alongside the more faithful Brotherhood. The 2003 series, produced while the manga was still ongoing, invented its own mythology and conclusion — one darker, more introspective, and more philosophically bleak than Brotherhood's eventual ending. The homunculi are reimagined as failed human transmutation victims, lending them a tragic dimension absent from the manga; Hughes' fate hits with equal devastation; and the series's exploration of war, sacrifice, and parental grief is handled with genuine maturity. The theatrical conclusion Conqueror of Shamballa provides a bittersweet resolution. The 2003 FMA is not the definitive version of the story — Brotherhood holds that title — but it is a compelling, emotionally rich work in its own right.
