The events of this narrative take place approximately 19 months after the Aizen incident; at that time, the situation around the world was very unstable but eventually returned to normal. However, shortly after that, people began to go missing from Rukongai and Hueco Mundo, and entire districts in both locations have now gone empty for no apparent reason. The Gotei 13 had no time to investigate any of these occurrences before being attacked in Seireitei.
The attackers, also referred to as Wandenreich, are a secret empire of Quincies that have been secretly present in the world for more than one thousand years. Their leader, Yhwach, is considered by all Quincies to be their progenitor. When Yhwach attacks, he uses an overwhelming amount of power against the Shinigami by having his elite troops take the Bankai from the captain of the Gotei 13 in the middle of battle, forcing the Shinigami to use their own power against them. Yamamoto, the highest-ranking Shinigami commander and Gotei 13 leader for over one thousand years, is killed in action, marking the first time that the Soul Society has been defeated in battle.
Ichigo's Bankai is impervious to being broken. Nobody yet knows why. In fact, the reason why Ichigo's Bankai has never been broken is an unresolved question that is integral to the entire plot.
Four stages of rising tension occur in a conflict: the Soul Society is in dire need of restructuring; Ichigo is discovering new forms of his capabilities, at the Royal Palace; and Yhwach moves closer to the one he seeks out—the King of Souls—who holds the many realities that make up the three-worlds system. Should he die, then all things cease to be as well; thus begins the last war.
The Thousand-Year Blood War provides clarity for all of the questions raised previously in Bleach's initial storyline, providing closure for all main characters—and with absolutely no filler and only action throughout, using Pierrot's gorgeous animation redesign, this is by far the finest visual experience in the entire franchise.
