Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is FromSoftware's most focused and mechanically pure game — a single-minded masterpiece of sword combat set in a dark fantasy interpretation of Sengoku-era Japan. Unlike Dark Souls or Elden Ring, Sekiro strips away character builds and replaces them with a combat system of extraordinary precision: every fight is a rhythmic duel of attack and deflection, where breaking an enemy's posture bar is the path to victory. The result is combat that demands genuine mastery — you cannot out-level or out-gear the bosses; you must simply learn and improve. Boss encounters like Genichiro Ashina, Lady Butterfly, and Isshin the Sword Saint are among the most brilliantly designed FromSoftware has ever produced. The prosthetic tool system adds creative depth, and the Sengoku world is realized with stunning atmospheric detail. Sekiro won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019 and absolutely deserved it.
