Hi-Fi Rush is the most joyful game of 2023 — a rhythm-action game from Tango Gameworks that launched as a complete and total surprise via Xbox's Developer_Direct showcase and instantly became one of the year's most beloved releases. Playing as the wannabe rock star Chai, who accidentally gets an MP3 player fused to his chest, every element of the world pulses in time with a licensed and original rock soundtrack: enemies attack on the beat, platforms move rhythmically, combo attacks sync with the music. The result is a game that feels like playing inside a living music video — colorful, kinetic, and irrepressibly fun. The writing is sharp and genuinely funny, the characters are immediately lovable, and the boss fights are spectacular set pieces where landing every hit to the beat creates an almost musical performance. Hi-Fi Rush's shocking closure alongside Tango Gameworks' shutdown made it an even more bittersweet gem.
