Black Myth: Wukong took the gaming world by storm in 2024, and for good reason. It is a visually stunning action RPG loosely inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. But beyond the gorgeous environments and fluid combat, the game is brutally challenging — especially when it comes to its bosses.
If you have been smashing your controller on a particular encounter, you are not alone. This guide breaks down every major boss fight, covering what you need to know, what mistakes to avoid, and how to actually win.
Before diving in: Black Myth rewards patience. The game is not about memorizing button combos as much as reading enemy patterns and knowing when to strike versus when to back off. Keep that mindset going into every fight on this list.
Chapter 1 Bosses
Guangzhi (The Fire Boss)
Guangzhi is many players' first real wall in the game. He hits hard, moves fast, and his fire attacks can obliterate your health bar if you are not careful.
The key to this fight is stamina management. He leaves gaps after his three-hit combo — dodge into the third swing and punish hard. When he starts charging his fire breath, do not try to dodge through it. Sprint sideways around him and hit him from the flank. His tail swipe is telegraphed well in advance, so you have plenty of time to react.
Keep at least one transformation ability charged going into this fight. Using it mid-battle when you are low on health can turn the tide completely.
Elder Jinchi
This robed enemy is deceptively tricky because his attacks look slow but have unusual range. The biggest trap is his spinning staff move — most players try to dodge backward, but the correct play is to dodge to the side and immediately step in for a counter.
Save your focus strikes for when he pauses after his long cast animations. Two focused heavy attacks will stagger him, giving you a free punish window.
Chapter 2 Bosses
Yellow Wind Sage
The Yellow Wind Sage is a two-phase fight and one of the most demanding in the early game. Phase one is manageable — he telegraphs his big attacks and you can get comfortable with his rhythm. Phase two introduces a persistent sandstorm that constantly chips your health.
Look for the Scarecrow Tumblestone item earlier in the chapter. The optional area that rewards it provides equipment that reduces sandstorm damage significantly. Going into phase two without it is a much harder experience.
In both phases, he is weak to hits from behind. Stay mobile, circle around him after each dodge, and prioritize getting behind him rather than trading blows head-on.
Chapter 3 Bosses
The Pagoda Realm Guardian
This mid-game fight is where many players realize the combat system has real depth. The Guardian has a deflect mechanic — certain attacks can be countered with a perfectly timed heavy strike, staggering him and dealing massive damage.
Practice the timing on his single overhead slam first. It is the easiest attack to deflect consistently. Once you are comfortable, start attempting it on his two-hit overhead sequence. Getting the deflects right makes this fight significantly shorter and more satisfying.
Chapter 4 Bosses
The Second Prince
By chapter 4, the game expects you to be combining your transformation abilities, spell upgrades, and consumables intelligently. The Second Prince stays aggressive throughout the fight with very little downtime.
His weakness is his wind-up before the charge attack. It is a long animation that leaves him completely vulnerable. Dodge to either side and unleash a full combo during the recovery. His health pool is large, so plan on a longer fight — do not waste resources early.
The Final Chapters
Without spoiling the story, the final stretch of Black Myth throws some of its most memorable and demanding encounters at you. Here are the principles that carry through:
Always have at least two healing gourds upgraded to maximum capacity before entering chapter 6. The final boss sequence does not give a generous checkpoint system, so survivability matters more than raw damage output.
Learn to read the gold shimmer on the boss — it signals their empowered state. When you see it, focus on survival and wait for the state to end before committing to big damage windows.
The true final boss has a pause after his signature three-hit aerial combo. He lands and stands still for almost two full seconds. That is your punish window. Memorize it and build your damage strategy around it.
General Tips for Every Boss
Upgrade your vessel first. The healing gourd is your most important resource, and upgrading its capacity pays off more than almost any offensive upgrade in the early game.
Use the environment. Many boss arenas have pillars or terrain features that break line of sight, especially useful against enemies who use projectile attacks.
Do not rush transformation abilities. Saving it for when you are cornered and low on health is almost always the better play. It resets the pressure and gives you a burst of health to work with.
Watch for the second phase signal. Almost every major boss in Black Myth flashes or pauses briefly when entering their second phase. This is not an invitation to attack — it is a warning. Back off and let the phase transition animation finish before re-engaging.
Final Thoughts
Black Myth: Wukong is one of those games where every victory feels genuinely earned. The difficulty is real, but it is fair — every boss can be read and beaten once you understand their patterns. Take your time, experiment with different builds, and do not skip the optional areas. Some of the best upgrade materials in the game are tucked away in corners most players walk right past.
