It all begins when Shôko Nishimiya transfers mid-year to Shôya Ishida's elementary school class. Shôko is deaf, and Shôya is a boisterous boy who does whatever he wants and causes nothing but trouble. They are two very different people, and Shôya doesn't seem to understand who Shôko really is. As a result, he starts bullying her, unsure of how to handle her. The rest of the class gradually follows suit, but more discreetly, without their homeroom teacher making any effort to reprimand them.
But one day, the boy crosses the line, and the principal demands to know who broke Shôko's hearing aids. It is then that Shôya realizes he is completely alone, as everyone turns their back on him, pretending to have been manipulated by him. Shoko transfers to a new school, and Shoya realizes that every day, despite everything, all she wanted was to be his friend.
Years pass: Shoya is now a senior in high school. Filled with remorse, he can think of nothing but repenting for his actions toward Shoko. He has even decided to learn sign language so she can understand what he has to say. Before ending his life, he learns where Shoko is and decides to meet her to ease his heart, but he has no idea that this reunion will change his destiny.
